THE FARMING SYSTEMS CHALLENGE

THE FARMING SYSTEMS CHALLENGE

Australian grain growers operate within an increasingly complex environment characterised by greater risk and evolving consumer and community demands. Price and market volatility, geopolitical risk, ESG requirements and changing consumer preferences present both challenges and opportunities. This challenge aims to rethink what we can grow, when we grow it, and for what purpose— integrating crops and enterprises in new or different ways, combining with innovative management practices to deliver more value to the crop, diversified revenue streams and reliable profitability. How can we provide greater choice of crops and practices and increase diversity within our farming systems at scale and within land capability. Could short-season summer crop area be expanded, companion crops or perennials have a place? Can RD&E unlock new markets for grain, utilizing their abundant starch and protein in production of biodegradable plastics and polymers or enhanced to produce therapeutic proteins , vaccines and other medical compounds?
