R&D breakthroughs are made possible by having access to the right people, skills and infrastructure – through a network that is connected, innovative and efficient. For new ideas to work on the ground extension must effectively connect research to growers whilst complimenting existing private sector advisory services, to develop tailored solutions that are readily adopted. Unlocking and further developing networks of researchers, growers, industry, private organisations and funding bodies tackling regional issues with a long-term focus, could make for an innovation matrix that accelerates user-driven solutions backed by rigorous R&D. How can we bring research out of the lab and onto the farm even faster, delivering real-time regional insights, more jobs, a wider range of skills and rural communities that are well prepared for the future? What if the next generation of R&D talent had better access to long-term employment pathways, support networks and a strong connection to rural Australia? What more can be done to ensure the grains industry has ongoing access to world-class people and infrastructure, working together to accelerate the delivery of solutions to growers even faster?
